Tasks and views

Create Tasks and read them as a list, a board, a table, a calendar, or a timeline.

A Task has a title, a status, a priority, an assignee, dates, an estimate, Labels, and a description in Markdown.

StatusMeaning
BacklogNot planned yet.
To doPlanned.
In progressSomebody works on it now.
In reviewWaits for a check.
DoneComplete.

The priority is Urgent, High, Medium, Low, or None.

Create a Task

  1. Select New task in the toolbar.
  2. Type a title.
  3. Select the Project, status, priority, assignee, and due date if necessary.
  4. Select Create task.

You can also type a title at the bottom of a group in the List or the Table, or in a column of the Board.

Open a Task

Select a Task to open it in a panel next to the view. The panel shows its fields, description, subtasks, attachments, comments, and activity. To open the Task on its own page, select the full-page button next to the Task actions. To close the panel, select the close button or press Esc.

Ciele keeps the width of the panel in this browser. It also keeps the groups and the Board columns that you collapse.

A Task can wait on other Tasks. Select the Tasks in Blocked by. The Timeline shows an arrow from each blocking Task to the Task that waits.

When you complete a Task, select Undo in the message to give the Task its previous status again. This also works when you complete many Tasks at the same time.

A Task can repeat. When you complete a repeating Task, Ciele creates the next copy with new dates. If you select Undo, Ciele also deletes that copy and the Task repeats again. If somebody already started the copy, Ciele keeps it.

To change the order of Tasks without drag and drop, select a Task and push Alt+Up or Alt+Down. In the List, you can also select Move up or Move down in the menu of the Task.

Resolve an Improvement

A Task can resolve one Improvement. Select the Improvement in the Resolves field of the Task. To remove the link, select None.

You can also open the Improvement and select Create task. The new Task gets the title and the Project of the Improvement, and the link.

When all the Tasks that resolve an Improvement are complete, Ciele moves the Improvement to In review. A person then closes it. The activity of the Task shows this change.

The toolbar

Each view has the same toolbar:

  • Search tasks finds Tasks by title or key.
  • Filter shows only the Tasks that match your filters.
  • Sort changes the order. Manual keeps the order that you set with drag and drop.
  • Group puts the Tasks in groups by status, priority, assignee, project, or due date.

The address of the page keeps your filters, sort, and group. You can share the address.

The views

ViewUse
ListRead Tasks in groups. Drag a row to change its order or its group. Select rows to change many Tasks at the same time.
BoardDrag a card to another status column. Use the column menu to add a Task, collapse the column, or mark all Tasks as done.
TableChange each field in its cell. Select Columns to show, hide, or reset columns. Drag the edge of a column header to resize it.

TimelineSee Tasks as bars by week or by month. Drag a bar to move it. Drag an end of a bar to change a date.

The Timeline shows only Tasks with a due date. It counts the other Tasks as unscheduled.

Each drag action also has a keyboard path. Open the Task and change its status or its dates in the panel.

Saved views

On a Project, you can save the current filters, sort, group, and layout as a saved view. Select Save view in the toolbar. The saved view shows as a tab for all members who can see the Project.

The creator of a saved view and the Admins can rename it, update it, or delete it.

Archive or delete a Task

Open the Task menu.

  • Select Archive to hide the Task and its subtasks. Select Undo in the message to restore it at once.
  • Select Delete to delete the Task, its subtasks, its comments, and its files. You cannot undo this action.
